The result of excessive hump reduction on the bony vault...

The bony vault is the upper 1/3 of the nasal dorsum. It is made up of paired nasal bones. Dorsal hump deformity is described as the excessive projection of the bony nasal vault. This hump may be removed during rhinoplasty by osteotomies, piezo or rasping techniques.  Following this procedure, lowered nasal bones are placed medially by lateral osteotomies.  When there is an over resection on this section,  the nose looks ugly with a parrot beak appearance.   Also, the paired bones do not unite in the middle, and the roof stays open. As the overlying skin and soft tissue shrink with time, the collapse on the bony vault is clearly seen. The surgeons should avoid over resections on the bony vault during rhinoplasty,  trying to achieve a natural-looking nose.
